SOS SMS for SKW and the Decline of Spin Bowling around the World
Tuesday, October 28, 2008 : Reference, Tests
The Australian Daily Telegraph has started an on-line petition to convince Shane Warne
to come out of retirement. Knowing his penchant for texting we can assume they have sent an 'SOS SMS for SKW'. But are the Australians the only ones suffering from a dearth of tweakers?
The MCC World Cricket Committee (WCC) recently issued nine statements(1) to the ICC. One of these was entitled 'The decline of spin bowling around the world'. Whereas the Australians, South Africans, West Indians and to a lesser extent the English, would have found this to ring true, those on the sub-continent must have been spitting out thier Darjeeling. It is mistaken to suggest that, new kids on the block, Amit Mishra and Ajantha Mendis have not added to the already well stocked vaults of India and Sri Lanka. So No, the Australians aren't the only ones in a spin, but it's certainly not everyone.

The WCC recommended a range of research ideas that could help to encourage spin bowling:
- Setting limits on the depth and weight of cricket bats;
- The production of more spin-friendly pitches;
- Limiting the amount of time that a pitch is swept during a match; and
- Ensuring that the playing area is the maximum that the ground permits, taking into account the safety guidelines.
