Can Twenty20 extend players careers?
Wednesday, September 10, 2008 : Twenty20
With Darren Gough contemplating playing Twenty20 cricket next season can the shortest format of the game extend the playing careers of modern professional cricketers?
For most players playing first-class cricket, thoughts of retirement start as they reach their early thirties. Ageing bodies begin to fight against the rigours of the cricket schedule. This is true for bowlers more so than batsman who can go on into their forties, as in the case of Graeme Hick. Darren Gough is 37 and as an ex-England bowler has played a lot of cricket. For him and others like him, a future diet of Twenty20 cricket alone may extend his career into his forties.
Often we hear the mantra 'There is no substitute for experience'. This is also true of a Twenty20 'Death' bowler such as Darren Gough. Three hours of cricketing excursion (6 hours on Finals day) every so often is an alternative to starting coaching courses or joining national newspapers when the big 40 looms.
