Why Kevin Pietersen of England should take a leaf out of Steve Kirby's book

Steve Kirby wants to play for EnglandSteve Kirby is leaving Gloucestershire when he still has 2 years left on his contract and has been awarded a benefit season. Why you may ask?

At this time, when Joe Public think of modern cricketers as money grabbing spot fixers, it is refreshing to see a sportsman putting his ambition before his need for fast cars and fast women. In fact it takes me back to the 1950’s and images of Tom Graveney with his big baggy whites billowing in the wind like a tall ships sails... anyway I digress.

Steve Kirby wants to play for England and at 32 he is running out of time. A regular member of the England Lions he hasn’t quite crept to the front of the taxi queue that is in the England Selectors minds. In order to do so he needs to play in Division 1 and not in the backwater that is the County Ground, Bristol.

If I was Geoff Miller I would give him an England cap just for this decision alone and add to a long list of England One Test Wonders, but I’m not. In fact I’m more like Windy Miller after that curry last night.

Kevin Pietersen et al should think about the Steve Kirby story, a lot. Steve Kirby isn’t on Twitter. He’s probably too busy practising!
