Somerset Playing With The Big Boys - Somerset CCC Sign Gemaal Hussain
Wednesday, October 20, 2010 : County Championship, Clubs
Gloucestershire lose another player. Paceman Gemaal Hussain joins fellow ex-Gladiator Steve Kirby at Somerset. Pretty soon John Bracewell will be opening the batting with Jack Russell. Hussain, 27, claimed 67 wickets in Division 2 last year and, like Kirby, hopes to attract the attention of the England selectors by playing in cricket's top flight.
Somerset have never won the County Championship. Having come second last year in the most agonising of last day finishes, Brian Rose the Somerset Director of Cricket wants to go one better. This would be an achievement he, as club captain, never attained even when the club had the services of Botham, Richards, Garner, Marks and er Roebuck.
When there is a lot of talk about Counties without Test Cricket fixtures not being able to compete financially with the big boys, these 2 acquisitions come as something of a surprise. But perhaps not being laden with debt form ground enhancements means that there is a budget available.
With these 2 bowlers joining the ranks regular opportunities for seamer Ben Phillips may be rare.
