Always the Bridesmaid never the Bride - Somerset CCC?
Friday, September 17, 2010 : County Championship, Twenty20
Last year Somerset were T20 Runners-Up and 3rd in the Championship. Back in the middle of August Somerset tied with Hampshire and lost having lost 1 more wicket in the T20 final. Yesterday they tied the county championship for points with Nottinghamshire and lost having won 1 fewer matches. In the Lord's final against Warwickshire on Saturday? Will they end up as the most spectacular bridesmaids of the season?
To be second in all 3 domestic competitions in one season would be quite an achievement. It would show that Somerset were the most complete team across all formats of the game for 2010 and arguably 2009 too. But that is a mere footnote in the eyes of history.
On a late September evening in London, where the toss will be crucial, Somerset can only lose. But not overwhelmingly. they will find a way to lose in the most drawn out excruitating way possible. Batting second, with the last wicket pair at the crease and having put on 56 to tie the scores, they lose 1 more wicket, of the last ball of the match, of the last ball of the season, to a dodgy LBW. Warwickshire go wild! Somerset go home, always the bridesmaids and never the brides!
Not. Somerset are going to kick Warwickshire all the way back to Birmingham.
