Ricky Ponting’s Desert Island DiscsVery soon, after a crushing defeat by the mighty Poms, Ricky Ponting will be whiling away the long afternoons on a beach somewhere, a la Damien Martyn, pondering the answers to Kirsty Young’s Desert Island Discs questions...

Kirsty: What would your 8 songs be?

Ricky: Look Kirst, firstly in the pressure moments that I would encounter on a desert island, I would rely, as a team on our planning and preparation. But, if after all our planning and preparation we came up short, then you just have to acknowledge the opposition. But, look, that’s Test Cricket.

Kirsty: Yes, that’s all very well but what’s your first song?

Ricky: Pup Yowlin by The Look

Kirsty: And what would be your book?

Ricky: Well Kirst, that’s an easy one. It’s the only book I have at home. After all when you’ve got a book why do you need another one? It’s mounted above the Dunny at home. It's Shane Warne's Century: My Top 100 Test Cricketers. If I’ve just been run out again by an egg laying turtle or caught in the deep by a hermit crab then, look, I’d need a little pick up, and just reliving the moment Shane was caught out on 99, well priceless ...

Kirsty: What would be your luxury item?

Ricky: Look, Kirst... can I call you Kirst? To me, just playing Test Cricket for your country is a luxury item. The feeling you get wearing the baggy green (Kirsty: The what?), the baggy green cap... and the feeling of getting over the line to actually win a Test match... well during the last few years a win was a precious commodity......Anyway all that and obviously a huge cargo ship full of tinnies.

(Where are the other songs? Ed.)
