Intermediate and Leather Cricket Balls for Junior Cricket

Junior Cricket Practice BallIs your son or daughter wanting to play cricket with a hard leather ball? I recommend using an intermediate ball before using a hard ball. This gives them a chance to get used to the feel of a heavier ball with a reduced risk of injury. Also suddenly using a hard ball can put children off the game if they have a bad experience.

An intermediate ball is made or rubber so is softer and more bouncy than a hard ball. It has a seam so the child can still be taught how to old the ball for different types of seam or spin bowling. It can still hurt but that's a good thing in that it helps the child learn to respect the cricket ball.

When allowing your child to play hard ball cricket be aware the ECB have certain guidelines regarding junior cricket, such as:

  • Use a lighter 4.75 oz ball for lower age groups.
  • No young player in the Under 15 age group shall field closer than 8 yards (7.3 metres) from the middle stump.
  • For players in the Under 13 age group and below the distance is 11 yards (10 metres).
  • These minimum distances apply even if the player is wearing a helmet.
  • Any young player in the Under 18 age groups, who has not reached the age of 18, must wear a helmet.
