Ian Blackwell All Rounder?
Sunday, December 07, 2008 : Reference, County Championship
On his move to Durham the Times Online described Ian Blackwell as a 'former England all-rounder'. Well he still is 'all-rounder' than most but in moving to Durham he is hoping to reform his England career especially in 50 and 20 over cricket.
Why leave Somerset?
On the surface this seems a strange decision but the reasons are:
- He doesn't fit into the fitness regime of Langer and coach (and ex-marine) Andy Hurry (a rotund peg in a round hole).
- He wasn't picked for all the one day matches Somerset played last season.
- England recognition may be easier at the Riverside.
However, Somerset often relied on his Championship batting at 6 and he finished with over 1000 Championship runs for the season with 3 centuries, about the same as Langer.
In cricket there are always a number of sub-plots running through any match. Imagine, in next years Somerset match at the Riverside, Langer making his point by continually finding Blackwell in the field and running a succession of cheeky 2's.
Is Ian Blackwell destined to be one of a long list of England One Test Wonders?
