It Was No Third Man Wot Won It!

Saturday, January 08, 2011 : The Ashes, Tests

It Was No Third Man Wot Won It!No obviously it wasn’t. But we did predict a 3-1 victory to England (like many others we know) and that Mitchell Johnson would be the leading Aussie wicket taker in the series.

Then our predictions are off, but only slightly. We had Shane Watson as the highest run scorer for the Aussies and if he was able to concentrate for longer than the time it takes for a cut and a blow-dry then he would have reached 3 figures.

We also took a punt on Ian Bell knowing that he was 'in the form of his life' and but for Chef, Trotty and KP outscoring him then we would have been right. Mind you by the time he was able to bat (@ #7 twice for heavens sake) he often didn’t have time to build a 3 figure innings. So glad he was able to get his maiden Ashes ton after thrity odd attempts (and god knows how many fifties). Come to think of it Shane Watson is stuck in an early to mid Ian Bell career crisis of not have the ability upstairs to go with the talent downstairs. (That last sentence just sounds wrong... Ed).

Lastly, both the Burnley Swinger and Trembles took more wickets than our pick Graeme Swann. However we feel the Aussie ‘curators’ moved the goalposts somewhat by trying to prepare pitches to take the English spinner out of the game. Little did they realise that the Aussie top order would do that anyway by not being able to bat for longer than it takes a gnat to chuff.
