Don't Change the County Championship Again
Wednesday, September 29, 2010 : County Championship, Clubs
Dear ECB, County Chairmen, etc... Don't Change the County Championship Again. It Ain’t Broke! No need to fix it!
Last season’s County Championship produced a nerve shredding last day of tension in both Division 1 and Division 2. Why then should any changes me made to the format in the review of scheduling currently being talked about?
OK the guys play too much cricket. But that is down to the endless T20 matches and consequent travelling up and down the country for them. I conceed that that they also play slightly too much CC cricket and Vic Marks’s idea of 8 and 10 team divisions is worth looking at. However re-organising T20 and one day cricket is the issue.
One sensible idea I have seen is this: In June/July start the championship matches at 12pm, allowing for a 7pm finish and giving fans a chance to come along and watch the final session's play after work.
Don’t get me started on doing away with Bonus Points. As cricket fans we love all the nerdy intricacies of possible points permutations - that’s why we are cricket fans for crying out loud.
