Cricket's Journalistic Cliches
Tuesday, September 21, 2010 : Reference, TV & Radio
You say Cliche, I say Clichay. Here are some of Cricket’s Journalistic Cliches:
- curtain raiser - first game of season, usually preceded by ‘traditional’
- season finale - last game of season, usually preceded by ‘traditional’
- ... heavy balls - I’m sorry but that has to mean Joel Garner, doesn’t it?
- memorable spells - well, Expelliarmus is the only one I can ever remember
- doldrum middle overs - proper ODI cricket when there’s no silly fielding restrictions and it’s damned hard to score
- the right areas - where you have to move to to get your kids educated right
- England on back foot - where England normally were when Dippy was playing
- corridor of uncertainty - anywhere in a Maze
Spot-fixing allegations, England retirements, fighting in the Nets and Jimmy Anderson’s photo shoot. Just another cliche day in Cricket. Yawn.
