Saturday, August 30, 2008 : County Championship

LV County Cricket ChampionshipWith Somerset benefitting from Hampshire's shock win over Durham, Sussex holding on for a draw against Nottinghamshire and Kent's remarkable draw with Yorkshire, how do things stand in the chase for the County Championship?

In an open contest this year a number of counties are still capable of winning the title. The three main contenders are Nottinghamshire, Somerset and Durham, with the latter two never having won it before.

Here are the remaining fixtures for the September run in to the title:

Somerset

Nottinghamshire (A)
Durham (H)
Yorkshire (A)
Lancashire (H)

Durham

Lancashire (H)
Somerset (A)
Sussex (H)
Kent (A)

Nottinghamshire

Somerset (H)
Surrey (A)
Hampshire (H)

Kent, Lancashire and Sussex are also in a position to challenge with Hampshire and even Yorkshire still in with a shout. Both Nottinghamshire and Somerset were promoted form the second division last year, with Nottinghamshire looking to repeat their Championship success of 2005 after being promoted the previous year. In 2006 however they were relegated. Durham are aiming to better last year's second place finish to Sussex.

It looks like the games that Somerset play against Nottinghamshire and Durham will have a major influence over the final result. Durham are the Betfair bookies favourites.
