County Championship Division 1 to be reduced to 8 TeamsMiddlesex Chief Executive makes public the proposals discussed at the ECB Board meeting last Wednesday.

In his regular blog, Vinnie Codrington, details his disappointment of the support being given by the majority of the ECB Board to a proposal to reduce Championship cricket by 8 days. Division 1 will be reduced to 8 teams, presumably by relegating 3 teams, or only promoting 1 from the Second Division, in the 2011 season.

The Second Divsion will have 10 teams. Each County will play 5 others home and way and the remaining 4 counties will only be played once each season. How this will work, God alone only knows. This is a solution that has been supported by Vic Marks.

Twenty20 fixtures will be reduced from 16 to 10, so by our calculations this is 14 (8+6) days less cricket overall, more than the 8-12 days that were originally promoted by the Working Party set up to discuss the schedule and with no change to the One Day structure.

By rethinking Twenty20 so that it means less days cricket but the same revenue and reduced travelling, then maybe we could retain the current County Championship as is (it was great last year). Alternatively, instead of undermining 4 day and Twenty20 cricket, let's please reduce the 40 over stuff.

The ECB will be finally deciding these proposals next February, a meeting that may resemble a scene from Black Ops: Call of Duty.
