Captain Burn Out
Wednesday, May 13, 2009 : Tests
Captain Burn Out - no not another comic book superhero but a very real problem for modern cricket. In an age of personality, sponsorship and constantly being in the media gaze International Cricket Captains
seem to have a very short shelf life.
To hear Chris Gayle talking down Test Cricket and wishing to relinquish the captaincy of the West Indies is admittedly hard to stomach, but you have to have some sympathy for him. Can you really blame Gayle for seeking the IPL dollar and to play in a format that is ideally suited to him?
For the Windies to succeed in Test cricket then Gayle, as a leading player, needs to contribute. If that means making his role easier and giving him more time then that should be addressed. Perhaps cricket boards and international coaches need to look at significantly reducing the off-field workload of the captain. When it comes to pre and post match interviews, let the vice-captain do more or other senior players.
