Henry Blofeld (Blowers) is a Test Match Special TMS legendIn his recent book ‘My dear old thing and other catchphrases’ Test Match Special veteran, Henry Blofeld (Blowers) talks of his 60 years in broadcasting for the BBC.

Often dressed in a subtle mixture of Burgundy corduroys, bright yellow blouses and pink bow ties, Blowers has become institutionalised within the confines of the TMS commentary box. But what do we really know about the Man behind the Microphone?

During the Sixties and Seventies, Blofeld’s career took a dramatic turn, appearing in a number of films for the James Bond franchise. As the character never showed his face several rumours arose that it wasn’t actually Henry and just a series of other jobbing actors.

Blowers also brought his early comic experiences of Vaudeville to the TMS commentary box. His hilarious catchphrases often include:

  • and another bus goes down the Radcliffe Road
  • a pigeon lingers on the square rather like a Radcliffe Road bus with a flat tyre
  • splendid cakes I once left on a bus
  • No I expect you to die Mr Bond!
