My Autographed Cricket Bat with 6 Somerset Test Players
Friday, August 15, 2008 : Extras
Back in 1980 Somerset CCC ran a competition that invited you to complete the sentence ‘I watch Somerset CCC because…’ Amazingly I won with the inspired(?) ‘they’re more interesting than listening to one of John Arlott’s commentaries.’ Phil Slocombe presented me with the autographed bat at the Bath Festival, where Sunil Gavaskar
was opening the batting for Somerset against Nick Pocock’s Hamphire.
This was a season when Sunil Gavaskar was playing for Somerset while Viv Richards and Joel Garner were on tour with the West Indians
. So along with Ian Botham
, Vic 'Skid' Marks and Brian Rose the bat has six international players who represented the Cidermen. Obviously my most treasured signature is Colin Dredge.
Players in order on the bat:
- Brian Rose
- Derek Taylor
- Pete Denning
- Hallam Moseley
- Joel Garner
- Viv Richards
- Ian Botham
- Hugh Gore
- Colin Dredge
- Nigil Russam
- Sunil Gavaskar
- Vic Marks
- Trevor Gard
- Martin Olive
- Nigel Popplewell
- Philip Slocombe
